Wild Turkey Fight It was interesting and also kind of gross watching two turkeys have an all out brawl with each other.  As I was watching them I kept saying to myself, "Are their beaks in each others mouths?"  Well, as the fight got closer and closer to me and finally ended up right in front of me, I could see that yes indeed they were in a beak lock.

Firework Display! My friend Jeff has a commercial fireworks license and puts on a huge firework display every summer in northern Minnesota.  This past summer was the first time I saw the show in person.  People came from all over to watch from land and the lake was also full of boats waiting to enjoy the show.  I set up my tripod and shot photos during the entire show.  I wanted to show what it felt like watching the show, so I made a compilation of my favorite shots and this is the final result.  I can look at this photo for a long time and not tire of it.

Carry that camera all the time... It's the biking season for me and I never leave home without my camera tucked in the bag on the back of my bike.  I look down this path every single time I ride my favorite route through the woods.  I always hope for a deer and sometimes I am rewarded!  The second thing I hope for is that I am successful stopping my bike quietly and getting my camera out before the deer runs away.  Quite challenging to say the least.

Some time for extra creativity! I captured some photos of a white tiger while in Las Vegas a couple of years ago and have been wanting to make something really cool from one of the photos where the tiger was looking directly at me.  I had an idea in my head and I finally was able to make the idea come alive!

And so my photography season begins... Tis the season to bring my camera wherever I go...

Serene Swans I have had this photo on my hard drive for quite a few months.  Sometimes the more in love I am with a photo the more I hold it to myself until I decide the exact photo tint I want it to have.  I tried this photo in color, in a warm tone and in this cool tone.  This cool tone was my final choice because it feels like the actual day.  It was a very cold day so the slightly bluish tone works for me.  Taking photos of swans in winter never gets old for me.  It's one of the few things that will get me out of bed early on a weekend.

Empty Nester I feel this photo has some symbolism.  Even though the duck that is flying away in the background is not from the nest in the photo, the two work together well for me.  It's still a symbol of the bird that flew the coop, the nest that is empty because the bird is now out on its own, new beginnings, growing up, a family that has changed, freedom.  This photo can mean many different things to the viewer.

Bye Bye.... I got up early one morning to go run an errand and it was so foggy and I love fog!  I rushed through the errand so I could head to the park and a lake.  It was one of those days where the fog sticks around for a while so I had a great time taking photos with no one around (it was very cold out, only the very hardy were out and about at that early hour).

Cedar Waxwing This is the first photo I have ever taken of a Cedar Waxwing.  I was standing on a lump of mud taking photos of a swan when I noticed some birds flying around to the left of where I was standing.  I just think these birds are beautiful.

As the Crow Flies... This photo was an unexpected surprise.  I was camping up north next to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and spotted this crow sitting on a rock near my campsite.  I slowly crept up the path to try to get a photo of him sitting on a rock.  Suddenly he flew off and I took this photo.  The crow in flight is much more interesting than him sitting on a rock.  I turned this photo into black and white as I have been falling in love with black and white photography all over again this past year.

Two more canvas wraps going up on my wall When in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness this past summer my friend and I came across a plant called, "Indian Pipes" or "Ghost Plant".  Super interesting to learn about them.  I made two of my favorite images of the plant into a brownish tone with a cool edge and ordered up a couple 16x24 canvas wraps for my home.  I can't wait to hang them up!

The Process There is something completely gratifying for me to be out in nature and take a beautiful photo, perfect it on my computer, print it up and frame it, and hang it on a wall to share with others.  I am completely and utterly in love with the entire process.

Creative Days  Today I set aside for only photography (and Prince music).  I laid in bed for hours reading photography magazines that inspire me.  Then I got started on a project that I have been thinking about for a long time.  The creative ideas for wildlife collages are pouring out of me a mile a minute.  This project should keep me busy this winter!

Meeting my photographic idol I got a chance to meet my photographic inspiration and idol last week.  Jim Brandenburg is a world renowned nature and wildlife photographer.  I study his work and visit his gallery in Ely, MN whenever I am there.  Last week he had collaboration with the musician Michael Monroe and I spent an evening listening to Michael's wonderful music paired with Jim Brandenburg's photographs.  Jim also spent a good deal of time talking about his photos and philosophies.  I was in heaven all night.  Afterwards we had the chance to meet and speak with Jim.  I will cherish this photo forever!

Two Eagles I never get tired of photographing beautiful bald eagles.  This pair was in a tree in the boundary waters.  I was lucky enough to be paddling with my friend who I have traveled with to the boundary waters for years.  She spotted the eagles and then paddled closer and closer so I could take pictures of them.  Thanks Renee!

For the Love of Blue Egrets My sister and I were out kayaking on the St. Croix River on the Minnesota-Wisconsin border this summer and discovered a Heron Rookery by chance.  I went back by myself two weeks later with my camera while the river was flooded and river running high.  It was perfect for me to get into areas that are hard to paddle into when the water is at its normal level.  I took a lot of photos of Blue Herons, White Egrets and Cormorants.  Here is one of my favorite photos of a Blue Heron (my favorite bird).

Boundary Waters trip - 29 year in a row! I feel so lucky that I have gotten to experience the beautiful Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness for 29 straight years.  It is my favorite place on earth and I hope I have a lot more trips up there left in my life!

This year I got up before sunrise one day because I knew it would be a foggy morning.  It was very peaceful to say the least.

Fun with Bubbles My nieces and nephew bought a rope-stick thing that you dip in a bucket of bubble solution and make giant bubbles.  I laid on their driveway with my camera pointed up and they created bubbles over me.  It was a blast to try to capture the bubbles and colors in the sunlight.  I did get a fair amount of bubble solution dripped on me, but I just kept my sunglasses on so all was good!

White Egret Angel White Egrets are one of my favorite birds!  I find it extremely challenging to photograph them because they are very skittish and often fly away before I get

close enough with my camera.  But sometimes I get lucky!  I was in my canoe when I shot this photo and it has instantly become one of my favorite images.
